Present Tense Questions with How

We can use the word "how" in a few ways.

1. Use "how" to ask for the method or way to do something.

How + do/does + subject + verb...?

A) How do you want to go to the park?
B) Let's take a taxi.

A) How do you make spaghetti?
B) Put the pasta in boiling water and cook it for 8 minutes.

A) How does he run so fast?
B) He practices every day.

2. The questions "How do I....?" and "How do you...?" are the same when asking for help or directions.
  • How do I turn on the fan?
    (=How do you turn on the fan?)

  • How do I get to the hospital from here?
    (=How do you get to the hospital from here?)
3. Use "how often" to ask about frequency.

How often + do/does + subject + verb...?

A) How often do you exercise?
B) I exercise twice a week.

A) How often do you eat out in a month?
B) I eat at a restaurant two or three times a month.

A) How often do you work late?
B) I work late every day.

4. "How many times" is also used to ask about frequency. It is often used with other time words. We can use other time words after "time" or at the end of the sentence.

How many times + do/does + subject + verb...?

A) How many times a week do you eat out?
B) I eat out once or twice a week.

A) How many times do you exercise in a month?
B) I exercise about ten times a month.

  • How many times a week do you work late?
  • How many times a month do you see a movie?
  • How many times do you eat out in a week?
  • How many times does she travel in a year?
  • How many times does he call you in a day?
  • How many times do they take a break in a day?

A) How often do you exercise a week?
B) I exercise every day except Sunday.
A) That's amazing. How do you find the time?
B) I make it part of my routine. I like to wake up early and exercise. It is relaxing.

English Conversation 2

A) You work too much. How often do you work overtime?
B) I work late almost every day. I have no choice.
A) Why do you need to work late a lot?
B) I want to get a promotion next year. So, I have to work a lot.
A) How do you stay healthy?
B) I try to eat only healthy food and I take a walk after every meal.
